Girls’ Basketball Goes Back to the Basics for ‘08 Season

Paige

Basketball season has started! 7th grade girls hope to perfect new skills, while 8th grade girls hope to win games, especially district ones.

These athletes practice hard every day, coming to school early to start practice at 7:30, where they work on passing drills like the three man weave. They also work on different types of shooting drills which require a lot of running for missed shots.

Basketball is very hard work because you have to run a lot” said Cristi, member of the 7th grade A team.

In practice, the girls also work on running different plays. Learning the plays proves  difficult at times, but the team catches on after a while.

“One thing we work on a lot is left hand layups” added 8th grader Tempest.

Many people might think basketball is easy, but it is actually really hard work. The 7th graders face learning several new plays to run during games and skills many have never before been expected to accomplish. For the 8th graders though, they know most of the plays and skills from last year, so it isn’t as difficult for them.

“Basketball is easy to me because I played last year and am used to it” said 8th grader Libbie.

Each team continues to be committed to practice as they gear up for their next home match, which will take place tonight. Good luck Lady Broncos!

Challenging those Warm, Fuzzy Feelings Surrounding Thanksgiving

Rikki

We all know the story of the Pilgrims sailing to Plymouth rock and meeting Squanto. But is this the actual story? Is this really what happened? Partially yes, it did, but what happened after this is probably something you have never heard.

It all began in 1614 when English explorers sailed back to England with a ship full of Indian slaves. One of these slaves was Squanto. He successfully managed to escape and eventually found his way home. Since he had been enslaved, he was a huge help to the pilgrims. He had already known their language so he taught them how to fish and plant crops. He also helped construct homes. During that year at harvest time, they all gathered for a feast in honor of Squanto and his tribe, as well as  for the success of the pilgrims.

Word spread quickly in England of the “paradise” in Plymouth. Other groups, like the Puritans, began arriving by the shipload. Seeing that there were no fences in this land, they took which natives they could for slaves.

In 1637 over 700 people of the Pequot tribe gathered for their Green Corn Festival which is now known as our Thanksgiving. In the early hours of the day, while they were still asleep, the Pequot were surrounded by mercenaries. When they awoke, they found themselves in shackles and chains. The next day the governor of Massachusetts declared a day of thanksgiving, because 700 unarmed natives had been enslaved.

Many other tribes faced the same fate until Abraham Lincoln declared one day out of the year to be a day of Thanksgiving (instead of celebrating when tribes were captured).

Hopefully, this does not give you the same warm, fuzzy feelings as the traditional memory of Thanksgiving would, but it is better to know the truth so that history does not repeat itself.

He Shoots, He Scores!

It’s that season again! You know-- the one people can’t wait for? Basketball! Not just regular basketball, but aggressive, demanding, boys’ basketball!

You might think basketball is a breeze and anyone can dribble down the court and shoot, but that is not what it is all about. You have to be aggressive, in shape, and there is a lot  more to the sport than dribbling and shooting.

Clay said, “I want to win district and beat our rivals, Graham! I’m also excited about basketball because it’s my favorite sport!”

Well this year ought to be exciting! Most of the athletes have set noteworthy goals to accomplish  this year.

“My main goal is to do really good and beat Wylie. They beat us last year and I want to beat them this year!” said Nay-Nay.

Some of the seventh and eighth graders have a lot of goals and are excited to beat several other towns, including Graham and Wylie.

Tristan said, “ My main goal is to make baskets and also beat Graham! I’m also excited about seeing all my friends.”

This year is going to be an exciting season for BJHS boys basketball. We have discovered their goals and are eager to see the Broncos play their best. Go Broncos!!!
